How does the game Super Mario Onslaught work?

Play with the heroic plumber, Mario, on his mission to finish off all Bowser's henchmen. Observe the equation that appears at the top of the screen and don't let the answer reach negative ten. To eliminate the Goombas and Koopas that appear, Mario will have to do what he knows best: jump on them.
