How does the game Archipelago work?

After the powerful storm last night, you wake up in a strange archipelago with lots of islands. You approach the closest one, and next to a skeleton you find a disturbing note: "Is there no escape from this horrible place?" Search for clues to escape the archipelago and avoid ending up like the poor man who wrote the desperate note.
